TV News: Reflections

On the final review of our film, we can see that there are some things that could have gone better, whether it be the way that the shots were filmed, or the way the subjects were acting. There is also the problem of not having enough shots to use as backups or cutaways, which would have helped during the edit. What Didn't Go Well In the live at the Hazlitt, we should've started in a space that was much better lit, because the beginning of our live piece suffers from not enough lighting. We needed more cutaways for the Electric Palace news package, because there were a few things mentioned in the interviews that we didn't get appropriate cutaways for. We should've got cutaways of the seats, the audience, and the staff doing their respective jobs, to make sure there was more flow to the final product. It would also be better to ask questions about the B-Movie Fan Club, because we found out afterwards that it is curated by an autistic 18 year old, and curating the

TV News: Top line and Why Independent arts

The independent Arts are becoming less important in todays society of technology, so we felt like it was time to have a story about the arts in the news in order to raise awareness about the different areas of arts, and hopefully create an interest in them. The Hazlitt Youth Theatre and the Electric Palace in Maidstone are the subjects of our news report. The youth theatre is celebrating it's 20th anniversary, which means that it has helped young people find a creative outlet, and an appreciation for the performing arts in Maidstone for 20 years. The Electric Palace in Hastings, is an independent cinema that screens not only the big releases that you would find at any Odeon, but also independent films, and B-Movies too. The cinema has a dedicated B-Movie Fan Club which is curated by 18 year old Robin Knowles. The fan club helps him with his autism and enables him to share his love for B-Movies on a monthly basis. This cinema has won awards for it's film programming in the pas

Fiction adaptation: Haiku video

We had a class to see what Fiction adaptation was, and it seems to be quite an interesting subject to choose. the lecturer was Mike Rymer, who is an experienced filmmaker, having worked all around the world for different genres and platforms, such as a promotional video for UCA Farnham, and we were told about the processes that something goes through when being translated from one form of media to another, such as the written word to film. We were given the task to choose a Haiku from a list, and then use copyright free stock footage to tell that Haiku. The Haiku that I chose was: My life - How much more of it remains, The night is brief This is what i made:

TV news: Filming at the Electric Palace cinema

We arrived at the Electric Palace and started getting our cutaways and GV's, because we only had an hour to film, because the cinema didn't open until an hour before the film started. We managed to get some good shots in the cinema itself, such as going up the stairs and Ashley Snoding, our presenter, coming through the door into the screen.  After we got all our cutaways and GV's we started setting up for the interviews with Cath Tajima Powell, the cinema supervisor of the Electric Palace, and one of the 30-40 volunteers there. These interviews went very well, with each of the interviewees going into enough detail to make the content they were talking about interesting, but didn't talk too long that it became boring.

TV news: Hazlitt theatre filming

Filming went quite well at the Hazlitt, despite us starting late and having no access to the area that we originally wanted to film in, due to there being a show in there that day. Instead, we had to improvise and film in the bar area, which was not going to be used that night. We set up the camera and went through lines with our presenter, as well as filming the introduction to our news story. After filming for about an hour, I unfortunatly had to leave, otherwise I would have missed the bus. I was told by my group though that the rest of filming went very well, with the live interviews going off without a hitch. My group managed to i nterview Jenny Longings, the manager of the Hazlitt Theatre, and asked her about the youth theatre, what it means to her, and how successful it has been. We also interviewed some members of the youth theatre and what the theatre means to them as well.

Camera workshop: Piece to camera and Teleprompter practice

We were given a story that had been in the news recently about a new scheme that Arriva are using that will have free wifi accessible on their buses in certain areas, which include Gravesend, Bluewater and Northfleet. This was what we were going to be talking about while practicing with the cameras. Wable to have another go at using the new Panasonic DVX 4K cameras, as well as get some practice as to how our pieces to camera will be shot. This also gives us an idea how the presenter of our show should act in front of the camera during these segments. This is part of the piece that we shot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cWtsI_6wfw We were also able to have a go at using a teleprompter, which is something that I have never had the opportunity to do before. A member of my group took the footage, which was shot in front of a green screen, and edited it so that there was a better background in place of the green screen. This is the footage shot. https://youtu.be/Rxl7-V_qtOo

Electric Palace location

The Electric Palace has finally got back to us and would be happy for us to come down to Hastings and interview the Cinema Supervisor, Cath Tajima Powell, and whatever volunteers are there on Sunday 15th October. Because of this we all decided it would be best to abandon the New Century Cinema in Sittingbourne, because the Electric Palace has alot more too it (the choice of films, the B-Movie Club etc.) Here is the evidence of our communication with the Electric Palace...

TV News: Helen's feedback

Today we had feed back from Helen about our news report, and what needs to be improved. Hazlitt News Package Needs more context through stats and statistics. Be less formal and journalistic. Find out how they have made the youth theatre commercially viable See if we can talk to the art critic from the KM, who has reviewed the Hazlitt's shows in the past. Fort Luton Live Report We have had to abandon the Fort Luton shoot, because we did not prepare enough in time for the day the show was going to be put on there. New Century Cinema Live Report We decided to do a live report on the independent New Century Cinema, in Sittingbourne. It is still in line with our topic of arts in the South-East, and provides a different aspect to the performing arts that we'll show with the Hazlitt. The cinema can provide a social environment for kids, and help them get into cinema as an art form too. Also because the cinema is independent, we can talk about the issues the c

Location research

Hazlitt Theatre The  Hazlitt Theatre  is one of the main  theatres  in  Maidstone ,  Kent . It was named after  William Hazlitt , the famous essayist, who was born in Maidstone in 1778. It opened in 1955. [1]  It presents a varied programme of professional drama, comedy, music etc. as well as local community theatre groups. This traditional proscenium arch theatre seats 353. The sister venue, The Exchange, is a multi-purpose venue suiting a variety of events from theatre or dancing to conferences.  Fort Luton This information was given to us by Amy Riley, director of the play that is on soon. Fort Luton is having a play on soon, and the director has allowed us to talk to her while rehearsals for the show are taking place. This would be great for our live interview because we can interview her while her actors are rehearsing amongst themselves. Or if that can't happen we can interview her in front of some backdrops and stage props for the play. New Century Cinema

Location problem

We wanted to film our package at the Electric Palace cinema in Hastings, so we rang them, but had to leave a message, and also emailed them. However, we have not heard back from them for quite a while, so we have had to change our location to the New century cinema in Sittingbourne, which I know we are able to film in as I have been there many times, so have already done a reccy, and i have asked the manager if we are able to film there and interview her.

Storytelling – Preparing and shooting news packages

News packages •These are self-contained news items. • Unlike VOs/SOTs, the news anchor need do no more than introduce the item and then wrap it up at      the end. • The reporter themselves also wraps up the story with their ‘TAG’ at the end (name, location) • The package contains the reporter usually both on camera and also their voice as “track” ( aka              VO/Comm). • Use the script as a template for structuring and guiding your edit. • Ensure you fully research what you are trying to shoot so that you are as prepared as possible. Structure and Content A good package will contain a mix of the following elements :  – Interviews, vox pops & set ups  – Sequences and actuality  – GVs/archive  – PTCs and walky talkies  – GFX It is useful to structure your piece as you might a good written piece of work:  – INTRO  – BODY OF ARGUMENT – expert opinion, stats, background info etc – CONCLUSION Storytelling Think of them as you would any other crea

Sourcing stories and story types

Sourcing stories and story types A broadcast journalist relies on a wide range of sources and contacts in the never ending search for new news The best journalists do not just wait for a story to appear, they go and find it, eg newspapers, social media, word of mouth, news agencies Source must be verifiable Fishman (1997) called 'beats’ - ‘ patrolling’ much like a police officer on recognized chains of information to supply potential stories with 'news value’ What 'beats’ form part of this chain of information Many of these ‘beats’ are exclusively accessed by news journalists eg calling police stations or press offices But in doing so, what other stories are ignored? Is it right to give priority to those particular stories? Why? Where the news room finds its stories Primary sources ●       Your own direct contacts ●       Original sources direct from source material eg archive material from libraries etc such as Kew ( National archives )

TV news: Final idea

Eventually, we decided to go with Ollie's idea, which was  looking into youth theatres, and the struggles of running those, and why young people should get involved with the performing arts, with some elements of Will's idea mixed into it.  We chose to do this because it seemed that this would be the best topic to do as it's more relatable to the public. Our plan is to film the live section of our show at the Hazlitt Theatre in Maidstone, as we all feel that this will make a better link to the topic of the show. At the Hazlitt theatre, we will also be filming some interviews with the actors in the youth club there, as they will be an extremely good source of information. We will be filming the package at either the Electric Palace cinema in Hastings, or Fort Luton, Chatham, due to there being a play on there in a few weeks. We have gotten in contact with all three of these locations, and are waiting to hear back from them.  We didn't decide to go with my idea abou

TV News unit

We were told that our first unit of the second year was going to be TV news, which sounded very interesting, as I had only done either factual or creative shoots, and news, despite being factual, has more elements to it. I am in a group with Will Barker and Ollie Elliot-Rye, who have both produced very good work during first year. We were told to each think of an idea to be the focus of our news story. I chose something that I had recently seen in the news, which was that snow leopards had just been take off of the endangered list for the first time in 40 years. I felt that this was news worthy due to it it being quite an uplifting piece of news, as most people have seen the WWF adverts, so would be able to see how much conservation has been done. The idea that Will came up with, is to do a live report from the Raindance Film Festival in London, a very big film festival that premieres feature/short films and music videos from 120 countries (past premieres include Memento, Pulp Fi
