Documentary unit: Choosing idea

When our group started thinking about what the main focus of our documentary would be, we went through several areas, but ultimately decided to go down the technology and science route, with a technology detox. We felt that this idea was a strong one, as it is usually people who are older that decide to go through a tech detox, so ours seemed unique as we were going to have a teenager as the main focus of the documentary. When we were researching the science behind the affects of technology in our daily lives, we were finding lots of useful information, along with some possible case studies and locations to shoot.

However, some complications arose, with colliding ideas and people not getting back to us for possible interviews, so we decided to end this idea and change it into just the general effects of technology in life, and the advantages and disadvantages of it. again, we felt like this was a strong idea due to it being from the perspective of a teenager, as they are the right age to have been around before technology was all around them, and have had technology be integrated to be part of their lives. there was plenty of research and statistics found, which was promising, but ultimately this idea fell through as well, due to more people not getting in touch with us after numerous attempts to contact them.

Our final idea was to focus on the idea of fear, which we thought would have numerous routes for us to go down. It was an idea that we all agreed was very strong, and that we could plan it withing the short amount of time that we had left before the deadline, which was just under one month. We pitched the idea and it was well received, so we continued with it.

Decision evaluation

This was the starting point for my script, so I needed to develop a story from this. The idea of a murder came from the effectiveness of the orchard hiding whoever was in it, so I thought that this was the perfect place for a murderer to commit his crime.   In wanted my story to have a twist, so I thought of a person stumbling across the murder scene, and the killer giving the innocent person a choice of either possible death, or helping with the body and walking away. I thought that this was a good idea as it is a scenario not often seen in films, so was a unique twist. Between the scripts that I wrote for my short film ‘Decision’, I had to change quite a lot in order to make it more e...
